Documents Needed for Marriage Registration

Legal marriage in Thailand requires district office registration (amphoe/khet) and a specific set of documents for each partner. Missing a translation, MFA stamp, or witness can delay registration by days or weeks.

At Thai Visa Centre in Bangkok, we prepare marriage packets for dozens of nationalities every month. This guide lists what foreigners and Thai partners typically need, in the order you should obtain them.

Registration
Amphoe/khet

Only district office registration creates legal marriage.

Foreign partner
Embassy letter

Translation
Required

Certified Thai translation plus MFA legalisation.

Witnesses
Two adults

Valid Thai ID or foreign passport, must attend in person.

The core document chain

Every foreign national marrying in Thailand follows the same logical chain:

  1. Embassy letter. Affirmation of Freedom to Marry (wording varies by nationality)
  2. Thai translation, certified translator
  3. MFA legalisation. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangkok
  4. Partner documents. ID and house registration (Thai) or parallel embassy letter (foreign)
  5. District office registration, two witnesses, fees, marriage certificate issued

Short answer: Foreign partner needs embassy affirmation, Thai translation, MFA legalisation, and two witnesses at the district office. Thai partner needs ID and house registration.

On registration day, bring:

  1. All original documents plus copies
  2. Two witnesses, adults with valid ID (Thai ID or passport)
  3. Registration fee, modest; verify at your amphoe
  4. Completed marriage registration forms, available at the district office

After registration, you receive a marriage certificate (Kor Ror 2 / Kor Ror 3). Request multiple certified copies if you plan visa or embassy use abroad. Related FAQ: Can I get a copy of my Thai marriage certificate?

Foreigner marrying another foreigner

Both partners obtain embassy affirmations from their respective missions in Bangkok, then follow translation and MFA steps for both document sets before registration.

Visa status, what you do not need

You do not need a marriage visa before registration, a work permit, or pre-approval from Thai immigration for the wedding itself.

You do need lawful entry status: tourist visa, exemption, or other valid stamp. Complete TDAC before arrival: tdac.immigration.go.th

Common mistakes

  • Submitting English-only documents without Thai translation
  • Skipping MFA legalisation after translation
  • Using religious ceremony certificate instead of amphoe registration
  • Expired passport or insufficient visa days remaining
  • Only one witness or witnesses without valid ID
  • Forgetting certified copies for later marriage visa application

Related questions

Embassy letters and MFA stamps may have validity windows. Register before they expire.

Q:Can my Thai partner's family member be a witness?

A:

Yes. Relatives are acceptable provided they hold valid ID and are not legally prohibited from witnessing.
