DTV Visa Thailand 2026: official specs, documents, financial proof, and refusal risks

The Destination Thailand Visa is Thailand’s primary long-stay option for remote workers, cultural learners, and families who need more than a 60-day tourist stamp, without the cost or qualification bars of LTR or Elite programmes.

At Thai Visa Centre in Bangkok we process DTV applications weekly. This page is the requirements reference for 2026: who qualifies, what documents embassies expect, how financial proof is interpreted, and where applications fail. For category FAQs see our DTV FAQs page; for step-by-step application see how to get a DTV.

Official visa specifications

DTV is a special tourist visa category with fixed parameters published on the Thailand e-Visa portal. Applications must be submitted from outside Thailand. Cryptocurrency balances and investment-only statements are generally not accepted as financial proof.

ItemSpecification

Who is eligible for the Thailand DTV?

Three main routes qualify applicants. Remote work must be for foreign entities or overseas clients, not Thai employers or Thai-market freelance work.

Workcation (remote work)

Employees need certificate of employment, contract, and employer letter confirming remote work. Business owners need company registration and tax evidence. Freelancers need portfolio, client contracts, and invoices.

Thai soft-power activities

Enrolment in Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sport training, medical or wellness treatment, or cultural learning at registered institutions. Activities should align with your stated stay length.

CategoryTypical evidence
Workcation employeeEmployment contract, employer letter confirming remote work, salary or payslip evidence.
Freelancer or ownerPortfolio, client contracts, invoices, business registration, tax or earnings evidence.
Thai soft powerMuay Thai, cooking, wellness, medical treatment, sport, or cultural programme acceptance letter and schedule.
DependentMarriage or birth certificate, linked financial support, principal applicant documents.

2026 financial requirements for DTV

The 500,000 THB threshold is the headline figure across most posts, but embassies interpret it differently. Personal savings in your name with three months of statements is standard. Combined accounts may be accepted for dependents at some posts.

Red flags include large deposits shortly before application, crypto transfers, and inconsistent account activity. We recommend maintaining stable balances for at least three months before applying.

How long can you stay in Thailand on a DTV?

Per entry: up to 180 days. With one in-country extension: up to 360 days before you must leave and re-enter. While physically in Thailand for 90 consecutive days, 90-day reporting obligations apply. Every entry requires TDAC completion before arrival.

For 90-day reporting help, see 90day.in.th.

Document checklist for DTV application

Embassy requirements vary by post and category. This checklist covers the core documents we review before every client submission. Missing or low-quality scans are a leading cause of additional-document requests and delays.

DocumentNotes
PassportValid 6+ months with blank pages. Biodata page scan at high resolution.
Passport photoRecent photo meeting embassy specifications, white background, no glasses in most posts.
Bank statements3 months showing stable balance around THB 500,000 in applicant name.
Category proofRemote-work letter, soft-power enrolment, or dependent relationship certificates as applicable.
Application formCompleted via Thailand e-Visa portal or embassy paper form depending on post.
Proof of legal residenceWhere required, utility bill or ID showing you apply from the correct jurisdiction.

Application process overview

A strong DTV file is built before you click submit. Work through these steps in order.

1

Confirm your DTV category

Choose workcation, Thai soft power, or dependent. Your documents must match this category from the start, switching narratives mid-application triggers refusals.

2

Build financial evidence

Maintain stable balances around THB 500,000 for at least three months. Avoid large unexplained deposits shortly before applying. Crypto-only proof is generally rejected.

3

Gather category documents

Workcation needs remote-work letters. Soft power needs provider enrolment. Dependents need relationship certificates legalised if required by your embassy.

4

Submit via e-Visa or embassy

Apply from outside Thailand through the post responsible for your legal residence. Upload clean scans, pay 10,000 THB, and respond quickly to additional-document requests.

5

Enter Thailand correctly

Complete TDAC before arrival. Carry printed e-Visa approval and purpose documents. Check your 180-day stamp at immigration.

6

Manage compliance after landing

Track extension deadlines, TM30 address registration, 90-day reporting if you stay 90+ consecutive days, and re-entry planning before stamp expiry.

Extension and re-entry after landing

DTV approval is not unlimited stay. Each entry has a maximum duration, and immigration expects you to respect stamp limits or extend correctly before expiry.

1

Track your stamp expiry

Each entry grants up to 180 days. Set a calendar reminder six weeks before expiry if you plan an in-country extension for another 180 days.

2

Prepare TM7 and TM30

Extension requires TM7 application form, passport, current stamp, TM30 from your registered address, photos, and approximately 1,900 THB fee.

3

File before expiry

Apply at immigration in your province before your permission to stay ends. Overstay even one day creates fines and an immigration record.

4

Plan re-entry if needed

After maximum stay per entry cycle, leave Thailand and re-enter on your valid DTV. Complete TDAC before every arrival.

DTV vs other long-stay visas

DTV suits remote workers and cultural learners who meet activity and financial criteria. These alternatives solve different problems at different price points.

Thailand Privilege (Elite)

Paid 5 to 20 year membership with airport assistance and simplified reporting. Suits retirees and frequent travellers who do not meet DTV activity categories or want minimal immigration friction.

LTR (Long-Term Resident)

10-year visa for wealthy pensioners, skilled professionals, remote workers meeting salary thresholds, and investors. Heavier paperwork than DTV but stronger for serious relocation with family.

Retirement O-A

For age 50+ with 800,000 THB in Thai bank or pension income. Not for remote workers under 50, but the standard route for retirees settling permanently.

Tourist visa (TR)

Lower cost and lighter documentation for short trips. Does not authorise remote work and cannot replace DTV for year-round Thailand base-building.

Common refusal risks

  • Large unexplained deposit just before application.
  • Employment letter does not clearly allow remote work.
  • Soft-power course is too short or poorly documented.
  • Applying at an embassy without jurisdiction or proof of location.
  • Overstay history or inconsistent travel pattern.
  • Crypto, investment, or non-bank evidence used as primary financial proof.

Frequently asked questions

Q:What is the easiest way to get a DTV?

A:Prepare documents correctly the first time and apply at an embassy with published DTV experience. Our team matches clients to appropriate posts and reviews bank statements before submission so you do not waste the 10,000 THB fee on a weak file.

Q:Can I work for a Thai company on DTV?

A:No. Thai employment requires a Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit. DTV authorises remote work for foreign employers or overseas clients under the workcation route only.

Q:Is DTV multiple entry?

A:Yes. The visa is valid for five years with multiple entries allowed. Each entry typically grants up to 180 days. You must complete TDAC before every arrival and respect stay limits.

Q:Can I apply while in Thailand on a tourist visa?

A:First DTV issuance is generally from outside Thailand. Do not overstay while waiting for policy clarity. Leave and apply at an appropriate embassy abroad.

Q:How long can I stay in Thailand on DTV?

A:Up to 180 days per entry, with one possible in-country extension for another 180 days. Across the five-year visa you may re-enter multiple times, but immigration expects genuine use, not permanent residence through endless extensions without leaving.

Q:Is DTV the cheapest long-term visa?

A:For qualifying remote workers, DTV offers strong value versus six-figure Elite membership or complex LTR documentation. It is not the cheapest way to stay 15 days: visa exemption and tourist visas cost less for short trips.

Q:Do I need health insurance for DTV?

A:Not universally required at all embassies, but strongly recommended. Some posts request proof at application. Hospitals expect payment regardless of visa type.

Q:Can dependents join on my DTV?

A:A legal spouse and unmarried children under 20 may apply as dependents with relationship documents and linked financial proof. Each dependent submits a separate application.
