Planning a long stay in Thailand? The two premium options most people compare are the Thailand Privilege Visa (still widely called Thai Elite Visa) and the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa. Both offer multi-year residency, but they serve different budgets, ages, and lifestyles.

Thai Visa Centre helps clients choose between Elite, LTR, O-A retirement, and DTV every week. This comparison explains what each visa is, who it fits, and how applications differ. Deep dives: LTR visa Thailand guide · Thai Elite visa guide.

Which is best for you?

Choose LTR if you

  • Meet USD 80k income or USD 1M assets + investment thresholds
  • Want formal work authorisation (remote or Thai employment)
  • Prefer annual reporting over 90-day visits
  • Are a highly skilled professional hired by a Thai company (17% tax cap)
  • Are a wealthy pensioner with passive income, not just Thai bank savings

Choose Elite (Privilege) if you

  • Want predictable residency without proving income
  • Are under 50 and do not qualify for retirement O-A
  • Value airport fast track and concierge over tax optimisation
  • Can pay 650k+ THB upfront and avoid annual financial documentation
  • Are retired but prefer not to maintain 800k THB in a Thai bank each year

Consider neither if you

  • Qualify comfortably for O-A retirement (800k THB / 65k income); cheapest long-stay path for age 50+
  • Need only 6–12 month remote stays: DTV may suffice
  • Plan to marry a Thai national; marriage Non-O may fit better

LTR application process

1

Register at ltr.boi.go.th

Create an account, select your LTR category, and upload qualification documents. Each stream has different financial and employment evidence.

2

Upload financial or employment evidence

BOI and partner agencies review your file. Target turnaround is approximately 20 working days for complete submissions.

3

Receive BOI qualification endorsement

With endorsement letter in hand, proceed to visa affixation within 60 days of approval at OSS/TIESC, embassy, or via e-Visa.

4

Affix LTR visa and pay 50,000 THB fee

Each person pays the LTR visa fee at affixation in Thailand; embassy fees abroad may differ.

5

Apply for work permit if applicable

Remote workers receive digital work permit; highly skilled professionals receive full Thai work permit through the LTR system.

Elite application process

Elite applications go through authorised GSSA agents, not the standard e-Visa tourist portal. TVC assists Elite applications from Bangkok and supports remote filing.

1

Consult authorised GSSA agent

TVC assists Elite applications. Match tier to budget and years needed before submitting passport and forms.

2

Submit passport for immigration screening

Background review typically takes 4–6 weeks. Respond quickly to clarification requests to avoid delays.

3

Pay membership fee upon approval

Transfer THB to Thailand Privilege Card Co., Ltd. per approval letter. Do not pay before written approval.

4

Affix visa at embassy, airport, or Chaeng Wattana

In-country conversion possible with 30+ days remaining on tourist visa or exemption. Complete TDAC before every entry.

Tax and work rights summary

LTR tax advantages

17% personal income tax cap for highly skilled professionals on qualifying Thai employment income. Foreign-sourced income exemption provisions for qualifying holders subject to Revenue Department rules, not automatic for all categories.

Elite work and tax treatment

No special income tax programme. Remote work for foreign clients is the common pattern without Thai work permit. Thai employment requires a different visa category. Standard Thai tax residency rules apply if you spend 180+ days per year in Thailand.

Can you hold both or switch?

You generally hold one long-term status at a time. Switching Elite → LTR or LTR → Elite requires planning overlap, cancellation of old permission, and new application timing. Do not let either visa lapse without a replacement plan, gaps create overstay risk.

Contact TVC before committing capital or paying membership fees if you may switch routes within the next few years. Tax residency and work authorisation consequences differ significantly between programmes.
