Thailand tourist visa: everything you need to know
A Thailand tourist visa is the standard embassy-issued stamp for foreigners who want to visit the Kingdom for holiday, family visits, or medical treatment, but whose passport is not eligible for visa exemption or who prefer documented entry over border discretion.
At Thai Visa Centre, tourist visa questions are our bread and butter. This guide covers single-entry and multiple-entry options, how they differ from VOA and exemption, and when to step up to DTV or Non-Immigrant visas.
Embassy-issued tourism visa, not for work or retirement.
Plus 30-day extension at immigration (~1,900 THB).
Allow longer during peak season and holidays.
Most posts accept online applications at thaievisa.go.th.
What is a Thailand tourist visa?
The tourist visa (category TR) is issued by Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates or through the Thailand E-Visa portal. It is for tourism and medical treatment, not employment, study, retirement, or remote work.
| Variant | Validity | Entries | Stay | Extension |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-Entry Tourist Visa (TR-S) | ~3 months from issue | One | Up to 60 days per entry | +30 days at immigration |
| Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (TR-M) | ~6 months from issue | Multiple | Up to 60 days per entry | +30 days per entry |
Single-Entry Tourist Visa (TR-S): One planned trip: visa is used once you leave Thailand. Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (TR-M): Regional travellers entering Thailand repeatedly within six months.
Visa on Arrival and visa exemption: not the same thing
| Option | Stay | Apply where |
|---|---|---|
| Visa exemption | Up to 60 days | Immigration on arrival |
| Visa on Arrival | Up to 15 days | Designated checkpoints |
| Tourist visa (TR) | 60 days/entry | Embassy before travel |
Exemption is free and convenient, but not available to all passports. Tourist visa gives clearer documentation when you need extensions, repeat visits, or immigration has questioned your entries before.
Long-term alternatives to tourist visas
| Need | Better option |
|---|---|
| Remote work 6+ months | DTV: Destination Thailand Visa |
| Retirement 50+ | Non-Immigrant O-A retirement visa |
| Thai spouse | Non-Immigrant O marriage visa |
| 10-year premium stay | LTR or Thailand Privilege (Elite) |
Tourist visa is the wrong tool for relocation. Using TR stamps for undeclared remote work is increasingly refused at embassies and borders.
Requirements for a Thai tourist visa
- Passport, valid 6+ months, blank pages.
- Application form via e-Visa or paper.
- Photo, passport size, white background.
- Financial proof: bank statements or employment letter.
- Travel itinerary, flights or booking confirmation.
- Accommodation proof: hotel or host address.
- Visa fee: varies by nationality and embassy.
Exact amounts and document formats differ by post. Never copy a friend checklist from a different country.
How to apply
Most posts prefer online applications through the Thailand E-Visa portal. Follow the sequence below for your assigned Royal Thai mission.
Register on e-Visa portal
Create an account at thaievisa.go.th with a valid email. Use the same passport you will travel on.
Select tourist visa category
Choose single-entry TR-S or multiple-entry TR-M based on your trip pattern. Multiple-entry costs more but suits regional travellers.
Choose responsible embassy
Select the Royal Thai post with jurisdiction over your legal residence: not where you happen to be travelling from.
Upload documents and pay
Follow the live checklist for your nationality and post. Incomplete scans are the top reason for delays.
Download approved e-Visa
Processing is usually three to ten working days when complete. Print or save offline before your flight.
After you arrive
- Immigration stamps 60 days (or less if requested).
- Extension: apply for 30 additional days at immigration before expiry (~1,900 THB fee).
- TDAC: complete Thailand Digital Arrival Card before every entry.
- 90-day reporting: if you stay 90 consecutive days without leaving, file a report.
- Overstay: fines of 500 THB/day (capped) and future visa risk.
Embassy document tips
Rejections often come from format issues rather than eligibility. Double-check these before you pay non-refundable fees.
| Topic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Financial proof | Bank statements should show stable balance covering your trip: exact thresholds vary by post and nationality. |
| Flight bookings | Some posts accept refundable reservations; others want confirmed tickets. Check the live checklist. |
| Photo specifications | White background, recent capture, no glasses glare, rejections for photo format are common. |
| Multiple-entry justification | TR-M applications may need evidence of repeated travel plans within six months. |
Exemption check: Many passports receive 60-day visa exemption. Confirm on thaievisa.go.th before paying for TR. See our exemption and VOA guide.
Stay legal after entry
A tourist visa is for holidays: not relocation. These compliance steps apply to every TR holder staying past a few weeks.
Complete TDAC every entry
File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours of landing. Tourist visa holders are not exempt on re-entry.
Track your stamp expiry
Immigration usually grants up to 60 days per entry. Set a reminder two weeks before expiry if you plan to extend.
Extend before overstay
Apply for a 30-day extension at immigration before your permitted stay ends. Overstay fines start at 500 THB per day.
File 90-day reports if applicable
If you remain in Thailand 90 consecutive days without leaving, file Form TM47 online or in person.
Upgrade before repeat tourism
If you need more than one tourist cycle, apply for DTV, retirement, or another long-stay category instead of stacking TR entries.
Common mistakes
- Applying at the wrong embassy because you are on holiday in another country.
- Paying for TR when your passport qualifies for 60-day visa exemption.
- Working remotely or freelancing on a tourist stamp.
- Assuming multiple-entry TR authorises indefinite back-to-back 60-day stays without scrutiny.
- Missing TDAC before every re-entry after regional trips.
- Overstaying even one day: fines and future visa risk apply.
Tourist visa vs DTV: when to upgrade
| Tourist TR | DTV | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Holiday | Remote work / soft power |
| Stay/entry | 60 days | 180 days |
| Validity | 3–6 months | 5 years |
| Remote work | No | Yes (foreign income) |
| Financial proof | Moderate | 500,000 THB typical |
If you are staying more than one tourist cycle or working remotely, apply for DTV before you develop a suspicious entry history.
When a tourist visa is the right choice
TR suits confirmed holiday trips, family visits, and medical tourism when your passport is not visa-exempt or you want embassy documentation before booking non-refundable hotels. It is also useful when immigration has questioned previous exemption entries and you need a clearer paper trail.
If your stay will exceed roughly 90 days total or you earn income while in Thailand, skip TR and review DTV or long-stay lifestyle options instead.
