Visa on Arrival Requirements: Complete Checklist

To receive a Thailand Visa on Arrival (VOA), you must present a complete document pack at immigration, pay 2,000 THB in cash, and meet nationality and travel conditions. Incomplete paperwork is the main reason for refusal, not queue time.

At Thai Visa Centre in Bangkok, we help travellers choose between VOA, visa exemption, and tourist e-Visa every week. This FAQ lists every requirement immigration expects in June 2026. Carry all documents in your hand luggage, not checked bags.

Before you fly: If your passport qualifies for 60-day visa exemption, use exemption instead of VOA. It is longer and free. VOA suits short holidays when you are on the VOA list but not the exemption list.

TDAC assistance: Thailand Digital Arrival Card

If you need longer than 15 days

VOA cannot be extended for routine tourism. Consider these alternatives:

AlternativeTypical stay
Visa exemption (air)Up to 60 days
Tourist e-Visa (TR)60 days. Extendable in country
DTV180 days per entry

Common mistakes

  • Missing TDAC. Refusal or long delay
  • USD/EUR only. Fee must be Thai baht
  • Onward bus to Cambodia without regional exit proof
  • Assuming VOA = 30 or 60 days. It is 15 only
  • Using VOA when free 60-day exemption applies to your passport
  • Packing documents in checked luggage. Keep everything in carry-on

Related questions

Q:Do children need separate VOA documents?

A:Yes. Each traveller needs their own pack and 2,000 THB fee unless age exemptions apply at the time. Every person in your party needs TDAC completed before arrival regardless of age.

Q:Can I work on VOA?

A:No. Any paid activity requires correct visa and usually a work permit. VOA is tourism only. Working remotely on VOA is also not permitted. Consider DTV if you qualify.

Q:Is VOA multiple entry?

A:No. One entry, one 15-day stay per VOA stamp. Re-entering requires a new stamp subject to daily immigration rules and eligible nationality checks.

Q:Can I pay by credit card?

A:Cash in baht is standard. Card acceptance varies by checkpoint. Exchange before you fly. Airport exchange may be closed or slow. Bring exact or near-exact 2,000 THB.

Q:What if I am refused VOA?

A:You may be denied entry and returned on the next available flight. At your expense. Incomplete paperwork is the main reason for refusal, not queue time. Verify every document before you board.

Q:Can VOA be extended?

A:Generally no for standard tourism VOA. The stamp is fixed at 15 days for holiday entry. Immigration may grant extensions only in exceptional categories such as medical emergency or court order, not for routine sightseeing. Overstaying triggers 500 THB/day fines capped, plus future visa complications.

Q:Where is VOA processed?

A:Major airports include Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX), Samui (USM), and Krabi (KBV). Selected land borders and harbours, not every checkpoint. Air vs land rules may differ. Verify your specific entry point.

Q:Who is eligible for VOA?

A:VOA is limited to specific nationalities. Regions include parts of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania. Examples often include India, China, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mexico. If your country is not on the list, you need visa exemption if eligible or a tourist e-Visa before travel. Always check thaievisa.go.th before booking.
