Thailand Elite Family Alternative visa: discontinued package, Platinum family add-ons, and 2026 options
The Elite Family Alternative was a discontinued family-oriented Thailand Elite package aimed at households wanting a 10-year multiple-entry stay. If you found this page through an old link or agent brochure, you need the current Thailand Privilege structure, not Family Alternative by name.
At Thai Visa Centre in Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai we help families compare legacy memberships with today's Platinum and Diamond tiers. This guide covers what Family Alternative offered, what replaced it, and how to cover a spouse and children in 2026. See our Thailand Privilege visa service for application support.
Multiple-entry Privilege visas for primary member and qualifying dependents under the old Family Alternative structure.
Family Alternative, Family Excursion, and Family Premium are retired, apply under current tiers.
10-year tier at 1,500,000 THB primary with 1,000,000 THB per family add-on in 2026.
Combined immigration review per nationality mix; allow 1–3 months end to end including affixation.
What was Elite Family Alternative?
Elite Family Alternative (EFA) was marketed to families needing long-term visas for the primary member and dependents; typically spouse and children under programme age limits. Without separate retirement or marriage visa routes for each person.
It differed from Elite Family Excursion (shorter, lower-cost family bundle) and Elite Family Premium (20-year tier with annual fees). All three legacy family packages are retired for new sales as of 1 October 2023.
Not available for new enrolment: Family Alternative is retired. Existing members keep benefits until expiry but cannot renew into this package name. Plan under Platinum, Diamond, or Reserve family add-ons.

Who is Platinum best for today?
Families that would have chosen Family Alternative usually want one primary membership with dependents on linked visas, 10 or more years without annual retirement extensions, fast track when children travel during school holidays, and EPL support for 90-day reporting across multiple passports.
Linked family visas
One primary membership with dependents on linked Privilege visas, no separate retirement or marriage visa route for each person when enrolled as add-ons.
School holiday travel
Fast track at Thai international airports when children travel during school holidays; a common reason families chose the legacy package.
EPL reporting support
Elite Personal Liaison assistance for 90-day reporting across multiple passports; redeemable through Privilege Points on current tiers.
Example: primary member on Platinum (1.5M THB) + spouse add-on (1M THB) = 2.5M THB for two people over 10 years. Higher than old EFA pricing but includes the current points system and programme guarantees. For 15-year family certainty, see our Elite visa cost guide.
Existing Family Alternative members
- Active EFA cardholders retain original validity and benefits until expiry.
- Renewal into Family Alternative is not available; plan upgrade or current-tier renewal at expiry.
- Upgrade to Platinum, Diamond, or Reserve may be available under Thailand Privilege legacy upgrade tables.
- Upgrade fees and any annual charges depend on legacy card type and remaining term; contact the member centre before assuming promotional waivers still apply.
Eligibility for family add-ons
Current programme rules typically require relationship proof, age limits for dependents, separate screening per applicant, and clean immigration history for each passport. Each family member receives their own Privilege visa sticker linked to the primary account.
- Proof of relationship; marriage certificate for spouse, birth certificates for children showing parental relationship.
- Age limits for dependents; commonly under 20; confirm current rule at application.
- Separate background screening per applicant, each passport reviewed independently.
- Clean immigration history for each family member; undisclosed overstays delay or fail screening.
Application steps (2026)
Allow 1–3 months end to end from submission to visa affixation. Our family visa comparison and cost guides help with budgeting before you commit.
Select Platinum, Diamond, or Reserve
Primary applicant chooses the tier that matches your family horizon. Platinum replaces Family Alternative at 10 years; Diamond suits 15-year school planning; Reserve covers 20-year generational stays.
List dependents in the GSSA application
Include spouse and children with relationship documents authenticated for Thai immigration if issued abroad. Each dependent is screened separately.
Complete combined background screening
Thailand Privilege forwards files to immigration. Typical turnaround is 4–6 weeks per nationality mix, longer for selected passports.
Pay primary and add-on fees
Upon written approval, pay membership fees directly to Thailand Privilege Card Co. Fees are non-trivial. Confirm tier math before signing.
Affix visas with EPL coordination
Families often batch affixation at Chaeng Wattana Immigration with EPL escort. Embassy and airport affixation remain available abroad.
Family Alternative vs current Platinum
Higher current fees reflect rebranded programme economics, not a like-for-like price match with legacy Family Alternative.
| Aspect | Family Alternative (legacy) | Platinum (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| New sales | Closed | Open |
| Validity | 10 years | 10 years |
| Primary fee | ~800,000 THB | 1,500,000 THB |
| Spouse add-on | ~700,000 THB | 1,000,000 THB |
| Points | Legacy fixed perks | 35/year (primary Platinum) |
Common mistakes
- Quoting 800,000 THB + 700,000 THB as current family pricing. Those are legacy Family Alternative figures only.
- Adding children without birth certificates authenticated for Thai immigration when documents were issued abroad.
- One parent on Elite, other on tourist visa long term; creates compliance risk for the household.
- Ignoring TDAC and 90-day reporting for every family member. Privilege does not exempt individual reporting obligations.
- Assuming Gold covers dependents: Gold is solo-only; families need Platinum minimum with add-on fees.
Frequently asked questions
Q:Can I still buy Family Alternative?
A:No. Family Alternative closed to new enrolment on 1 October 2023. Apply under Platinum or Diamond family add-ons through the current Thailand Privilege programme.
Q:Is Platinum the direct replacement?
A:Yes; same 10-year family horizon as Family Alternative, but pricing, Privilege Points, and benefit delivery differ from the legacy package.
Q:Can children study on a Privilege visa?
A:Yes for international schools. University routes may need education visas. Confirm with the school and immigration before enrolling.
Q:Does family Elite include work permits?
A:No. Thai employment requires separate work authorisation per adult. Remote income from foreign employers is the typical pattern for Privilege holders.
Q:What is the cheapest family option?
A:Gold is solo-only at 900,000 THB. Families needing linked visas should budget Platinum minimum. 1,500,000 THB primary plus 1,000,000 THB per qualifying dependent.
Q:Should we choose Diamond instead of Platinum?
A:Diamond suits families wanting 15-year certainty; common when enrolling children in international schools. Compare cost per year against Platinum plus a mid-term renewal plan.
Q:What happens when my Family Alternative expires?
A:Renewal follows the current tier catalogue, not retired package names. Contact Thailand Privilege or your GSSA before expiry to plan upgrade or new-tier enrolment.
Q:Do all family members need separate 90-day reports?
A:Yes; each Privilege visa holder must comply with 90-day reporting, TDAC on every entry, and TM30 when changing address. EPL can assist primary members through Privilege Points.
